TOR000010 - Viscous Coupling
The viscous coupling sits in the propshaft driveline and transfers torque between the front and rear axles. It contains a multi-plate pack immersed in a high-viscosity silicone fluid; when a speed differential develops between the two sets of plates, the fluid resistance transmits torque to the slower-spinning axle, providing passive all-wheel-drive torque distribution without driver input.
When replacing the viscous coupling, it is advisable to inspect and replace the propshaft support bearings and carrier assembly at the same time.
