Hydraulic Timing Chain Tensioner for the 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engines, mounted behind the front timing cover on the slack side of the timing chain.

It bears against the tensioner blade to keep the timing chain under correct tension, using engine oil pressure to extend and automatically take up slack as the chain wears. This maintains accurate valve timing and reduces timing chain rattle.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ETC5190 timing chain tensioner do?
The ETC5190 is the hydraulic timing chain tensioner for the 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engines. It's mounted behind the front timing cover on the slack side of the chain, using engine oil pressure to extend against the tensioner blade and automatically take up slack as the chain wears.
What are the signs the timing chain tensioner needs replacing?
A worn timing chain tensioner typically shows as a rattle from the front timing cover, especially on start-up before oil pressure builds. On the 2.25L and 2.5L petrol engines, a tensioner that can't take up slack lets the chain flap, which risks timing drift. It's usually replaced with the chain.
Should the tensioner be replaced with the timing chain?
Yes, the timing chain tensioner is typically renewed whenever the chain is replaced on the 2.25L and 2.5L petrol engines. Fitting a new chain against a worn tensioner shortens the life of both. Since access needs the timing cover off, doing them together avoids a second strip-down.
