Frequently asked questions

What is the ETC5191 timing chain and what does it fit?
The ETC5191 is the timing chain for the 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engines with the five-bearing crankshaft. It drives the camshaft sprocket from the crankshaft sprocket to keep valve timing correct. This chain measures 36cm with 38 links and fits Defender and Series 2 and 3 petrol models.
How do I know this is the right timing chain for my engine?
This ETC5191 chain suits the five-bearing 2.25L and 2.5L petrol engines and has 38 links at 36cm long. Earlier three-bearing engines typically use a different chain, so check your bearing type and link count before ordering. It fits Defender and Series 2 and 3 petrol applications.
Should the tensioner and sprockets be replaced with the timing chain?
The timing chain is typically renewed along with the tensioner and worn sprockets on the 2.25L and 2.5L petrol engines. A new chain running on worn sprockets wears quickly. Since the front timing cover has to come off for access, replacing the wearing parts together is usual practice.
