Frequently asked questions

What is the STC491 brake master cylinder kit?
The STC491 is a repair kit for the Defender brake master cylinder on vehicles without ABS. It's used to overhaul the existing cylinder rather than replace it, so you keep the original body and renew the internal sealing parts. It suits Defenders up to chassis HA901220.
Is this a complete master cylinder or just the seals?
The STC491 is an overhaul kit, not a complete master cylinder. If the bore inside your existing cylinder is scored, pitted or corroded, a seal kit won't cure the problem and a replacement cylinder is the better route. Inspect the bore before committing to a rebuild.
How do I know if my Defender has the non-ABS master cylinder?
The STC491 covers non-ABS Defenders up to chassis HA901220. ABS equipped vehicles use a different master cylinder and this kit won't suit them. Check your chassis number and look for an ABS modulator block and wheel speed sensors before ordering.
What happens if the master cylinder seals fail?
Failed master cylinder seals usually show as a brake pedal that slowly sinks to the floor under steady pressure, with no external fluid leak. Braking may still work but feels vague and inconsistent. This is a safety critical fault, so the Defender should not be driven until it's rebuilt or replaced.
Does the brake system need bleeding afterwards?
Yes. The brake system must be bled after any master cylinder work, because air enters the circuit as soon as the cylinder is opened. On a non-ABS Defender that's a conventional bleed at each wheel in the order given in the workshop manual.
