What is the blanking plate used for?

Why does the manifold need a blanking plate?
The blanking plate seals a redundant port on the twin-carb V8 inlet manifold, preventing an air leak into the induction system. An unsealed port typically causes a weak mixture and poor idle, so the plate must be fitted and sealed correctly during a manifold rebuild.
