Air suspension is the standard or common fit across the modern independent-suspension range: Discovery 3, 4 and 5, Range Rover L322, L405, L460 and Velar, Range Rover Sport L320, L494 and L461, and the current Defender L663. Several of these were also offered with coil springs on lower specifications, so always confirm the fitted setup. Earlier air systems ran on the Range Rover P38A, the late Range Rover Classic LSE and self-levelling Discovery 2 models. System Overview
The suspension and steering system on a Land Rover or Range Rover does two jobs at once. It manages wheel motion across varied terrain, and it keeps the contact patch in the geometry the chassis was designed for. When either job slips, drivers notice it first through the steering wheel and through tyre wear patterns.
Vehicle use affects wear, but not in a fixed pattern. Heavy loads, towing, potholes, off-road contamination and unresolved air leaks all push wear into different parts. Model, suspension type, age and maintenance change the picture too, so diagnose by symptom rather than assuming a particular failure order.

Land Rover axle and swivel partsControl arms locate the wheel hub against the chassis and carry the bushes that absorb vibration and small geometry movement. On the double-wishbone front suspension layouts (Discovery 3 and 4, Range Rover L405 and L460, Range Rover Sport L320, L494 and L461), lower arm bush wear is a common issue. Drivers report a clunk during braking, during steering lock, or when the suspension loads under bumps. The Range Rover L322 uses a strut-type front instead, where the air strut, transverse link and compression link are the common service areas.
The decision when ordering is between pressed-bush replacement and a complete arm assembly. Pressed bushes cost less in parts but require the correct press equipment and a structurally sound original arm. An aged or corroded arm often justifies replacing the complete assembly on labour and reliability grounds.
Wheel bearing construction varies by model, axle, build and VIN. Many later independent-suspension models use a bolt-on hub assembly where the bearing and hub are renewed as one unit, but others use a sealed bearing pressed into the carrier, and the front and rear can differ on the same vehicle (the Freelander 2 is a good example). Older platforms such as the Series, Defender Classic, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic use serviceable opposed taper roller bearings that can be cleaned, re-greased and adjusted. Check how your bearing is supplied before ordering.
A failing hub or bearing typically presents as a hum that rises with road speed and changes character on a steering input. Where the vehicle uses a bolt-on unit, replacement is straightforward because the assembly unbolts from the upright; where the bearing is pressed into the carrier it needs pressing out and in. The steering rack converts hand-wheel rotation into linear motion at the tie rod ends. Tie rod ends and inner ball joints wear gradually and can produce play, vague steering and uneven tyre wear before they produce noise. Rack-internal wear and seal leaks tend to appear as excess play found during alignment work, where it cannot be corrected by toe adjustment alone.
Bushes and ball joints can fail on their own, a torn boot, a seized joint or a perished bush is enough, but they often wear alongside the parts around them. Ordering a single ball joint without inspecting the wishbone bush, the anti-roll bar drop link and the opposite side is a common rework trigger. Inspect the adjacent parts while access is open and replace what is worn, scoped to one axle at a time.
Air SuspensionAir suspension is the most complex subsystem in this category and the highest-value replacement decision. It applies to:
The parts that most often need attention on an air system are the air springs and the compressor. Air springs perish and split at the fold points in the rubber bladder and start to leak. A compressor then overworks trying to keep up with that leak and eventually wears out, which is why an unresolved air leak so often takes the compressor with it. Air lines, the valve block and ride height sensors can also fault, though sensors and control electronics frequently last the life of the vehicle. Diagnose each part on its own rather than replacing to a fixed order.

Confirm whether your vehicle is on air or coil before ordering. Some Discovery 3 builds left the factory on coil springs, and aftermarket air-to-coil conversions are common and may already have been fitted, so the springs on the vehicle now may not match the original specification. Check from the VIN-linked build record or by looking at the spring at the wheel: an air spring is a tall rubber bladder, a coil is a steel spring.
Suspension parts are returned more often than most categories because fitment varies more than buyers expect. Five checks before ordering save the most labour:
Several parts share labour access, so when one is off it is worth inspecting and, if worn, renewing its neighbour in the same visit. This is about inspection and shared labour, not automatic replacement.
Access matters too. On some models the lower arm runs close to the brake hose and caliper fixings, so it is worth checking the nearby brake parts while access is open. Incorrect alignment after suspension work can also cause rapid or uneven tyre wear.

When ordering a control arm, check whether it comes with bushes fitted and whether the geometry matches the original. Aftermarket arms sometimes use different bush geometry from OEM, and mixing specifications across an axle can leave the car feeling slightly off even when nothing is worn, so keep the axle consistent.
Correct fitment by model, year and variant is the deciding factor on suspension orders. Land Rover and Range Rover models were produced with multiple suspension configurations across trim levels and markets, and the parts are rarely cross-compatible.

Freelander 2 common faults and fixesCommon causes of knocking over uneven surfaces include worn lower ball joints, wishbone bushes or anti-roll bar drop links. A clunk that appears on steering lock can point to a lower ball joint, but it can also come from a CV joint, a track rod end, a top mount, a drop link, the steering stops or a loose fixing, so check play, boots and movement under load before ordering. There is no fixed interval. As a broad aftermarket guide, air springs often last around 6 to 10 years or roughly 130,000 to 160,000 kilometres, but climate, use and how often the vehicle is left standing all change that. Leakage, cracking at the folds, a corner that settles overnight, or a compressor that runs longer than it used to are better signs to replace than mileage alone.
Not unless both show wear. Where the vehicle uses a bolt-on hub unit, the hub is renewed as a single unit per wheel; where the bearing is pressed into the carrier it is done individually, and the front and rear can differ on the same vehicle. Inspect the opposite side at the same labour visit, but do not replace it pre-emptively unless there is wear.
The Range Rover Sport L320 (2005 to 2013) came with four-corner air suspension as standard. Many have since been converted to coil springs with aftermarket kits, so the simplest check is the spring at the wheel: an air spring is a tall rubber bladder, a coil is a steel spring. The VIN-linked build record gives the original factory specification.
Check the alignment whenever you replace a geometry-setting part such as a control arm, tie rod end or wishbone, or whenever the repair disturbs the knuckle or the adjustment points. A tie rod replacement always needs it because it changes toe directly. A straightforward bolt-on hub swap that leaves the knuckle undisturbed does not by itself change alignment, but it is still worth a check.
