Outer Shim - 1.35mm - Front Halfshaft / CV Joint

This 1.35mm shim is used to set the end-float of the front halfshaft within the CV joint assembly at the outer (hub cap) end. Correct end-float is critical for long-term CV joint and halfshaft life; shims are selected from a range of thicknesses to achieve the specified tolerance during assembly or rebuild.

The shim is fitted between the CV joint and the retaining circlip at the outer end of the halfshaft. It is replaced or re-selected whenever the front halfshaft, CV joint, or hub assembly is disassembled.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1.35mm front halfshaft shim used for?
This 1.35mm shim sets the end-float of the front halfshaft within the CV joint assembly, at the outer hub-cap end. Correct end-float protects the CV joint and halfshaft from premature wear. It sits between the CV joint and the outer retaining circlip on Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles.
How do I know whether I need the 1.35mm shim or a different thickness?
Shim thickness is selected to achieve the specified halfshaft end-float, so 1.35mm is one size in a range. Measure the end-float on your CV joint during assembly and pick the shim that brings it into tolerance. The correct thickness varies between vehicles, so don't assume 1.35mm without checking.
When should the front halfshaft shim be replaced?
Replace or re-select this shim whenever the front halfshaft, CV joint or hub is dismantled on a Defender (1987-2016), Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic. Re-check end-float on reassembly, as a worn or wrong-thickness shim allows excess movement that shortens CV joint life.
