Outer Shim - 1.65mm - Front Halfshaft / CV Joint

This 1.65mm shim is used to set the end-float of the front halfshaft within the CV joint assembly at the outer (hub cap) end. Correct end-float is critical for long-term CV joint and halfshaft life; shims are selected from a range of thicknesses to achieve the specified tolerance during assembly or rebuild.

The shim is fitted between the CV joint and the retaining circlip at the outer end of the halfshaft. It is replaced or re-selected whenever the front halfshaft, CV joint, or hub assembly is disassembled.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1.65mm front halfshaft shim for?
This 1.65mm shim sets the end-float of the front halfshaft inside the CV joint assembly at the outer hub-cap end. It fits between the CV joint and the outer retaining circlip. Correct end-float keeps CV joint and halfshaft wear in check on Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles.
Why are halfshaft shims sold in different thicknesses like 1.65mm?
Halfshaft shims come in a range of thicknesses because end-float is set by selection, not a fixed size. The 1.65mm shim is one option; you fit whichever thickness brings the measured end-float into tolerance. Check the figure on assembly rather than assuming 1.65mm suits your hub.
When is the 1.65mm outer shim replaced?
Re-select or replace this outer shim whenever the front halfshaft, CV joint or hub is stripped on a Defender, Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic (1970-1994). Re-checking end-float on rebuild matters, as a worn or incorrect shim lets the halfshaft move too much and accelerates CV joint wear.
