Frequently asked questions

What does the 24 spline Stub Shaft do?
It's the front stub shaft in the front axle swivel housing, carrying drive from the differential through the CV joint out to the front wheel hub. The 24-spline interface locates it to the hub, and it's specific to the Series 3 109 inch long wheelbase front axle.
Where in the front axle is this stub shaft located?
It sits inside the swivel housing at the outer end of the front axle, between the CV joint and the front hub. Removing it means pulling the hub and swivel housing apart, so it's normally tackled during a front axle overhaul rather than in isolation.
Why does the stub shaft need replacing?
Spline wear from years of drive torque, or physical damage to the shaft itself, are the usual reasons for replacement. Worn splines show up as play or clonking from the front hub under acceleration, and are typically found during a front axle strip-down.
