Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC8163 free wheeling hub kit do?

The RTC8163 free wheeling hub kit replaces the standard front driving flanges with manually locking hubs on a 24 spline front axle. Set to free, the front axle shafts, differential and propshaft stop turning when four wheel drive isn't in use. Set to lock, drive returns to the wheel.

Which Land Rovers does this 24 spline hub kit fit?

This kit fits Land Rover Series models with a 24 spline front axle, factory fitment from Series III in 1980 onward, and it can be retrofitted to earlier Series IIA vehicles. Count the splines on your front axle shaft before ordering, as 10 and 24 spline axles both exist.

How many hubs come in the kit?

The kit is supplied as a pair, one hub per front wheel. Both hubs must be set to the same position before four wheel drive is selected, otherwise drive goes to one front wheel only and the axle is loaded unevenly.

Why fit free wheeling hubs to a Series Land Rover?

Free wheeling hubs remove the drag of turning the front axle shafts, differential and propshaft during normal road use, which cuts rotating wear on those components. On a part time four wheel drive Series Land Rover the front driveline turns constantly with fixed flanges.

Can free wheeling hubs be fitted at home?

Fitting free wheeling hubs is typically a home job with hand tools. The standard driving flange comes off the front stub axle and the hub goes on in its place. Corroded flange studs and old gasket residue are the usual holdups on a Series Land Rover.
