Frequently asked questions

What does the Swivel Ball Seal Retainer 235968 do?
The swivel ball seal retainer (235968) clamps the front swivel housing oil seal against the swivel ball on Land Rover Series 1, 2, 2A, 3, and Defender up to 2006. It holds the seal perpendicular to the ball so it retains axle oil inside the housing and excludes dirt and water from the constant-velocity joint.
When does the swivel ball seal retainer typically need replacing?
The retainer typically needs replacement when it becomes corroded, cracked, or distorted enough that the seal lifts from the swivel ball. Symptoms include oil weeping around the swivel housing and accelerated CV joint wear from dirt contamination. It's usually replaced together with the oil seal during a swivel service.
Is the seal retainer always renewed during a swivel housing rebuild?
It's good practice to renew the retainer along with the oil seal. A new seal against a worn or distorted retainer may not seat correctly against the ball, leading to early seal failure. A fresh retainer and seal together give the best chance of a leak-free swivel housing.
