What does the valve guide do in the Rover V8?

The valve guide is pressed into the Rover V8 cylinder head and supports the valve stem, keeping the valve concentric with its seat through every cycle. It controls stem-to-guide clearance and carries heat from the valve into the head. Fits the 3.5, 4.0 and 4.6 litre V8 petrol engines.

How many valve guides does a V8 head take?

Each valve needs its own guide, so a full Rover V8 top-end rebuild uses one guide per valve across both cylinder heads. Count the valves on your engine before ordering, and it is usual to renew all guides together when the heads are being reconditioned.

Why do valve guides wear and need replacing?

Valve guides wear as the valve stem works against them over high mileage, opening up clearance so the valve no longer seats squarely. Worn guides on the Rover V8 typically let oil draw down the stems, giving blue smoke and reduced sealing, so they are renewed during a head rebuild.
