Frequently asked questions

What is the half shaft FRC1645?
The FRC1645 is the rear left-hand half shaft with a 10/24 spline count, ten splines at the differential end and twenty-four at the hub end. It transmits drive from the rear differential to the left rear wheel hub on the Series II/IIA/III axle.
Which side is it and is there a matching shaft?
This is the left-hand rear shaft, sold individually. The right-hand side uses FRC1644. Where one shaft has failed, it's common to check or renew both sides since they share the same service life.
What does 10/24 spline mean and will it fit my axle?
10/24 spline means ten splines at the differential end and twenty-four at the hub end, distinguishing it from earlier single-spline shafts. It fits Series II/IIA/III (from 1980/81) and Defender axles with the 10/24 spline. Count your splines before ordering.
Why do rear half shafts fail?
Rear half shafts on Series and Defender axles typically shear or twist their splines under heavy shock loading off-road or with a worn differential. The usual sign is a bang followed by loss of drive to one rear wheel.
