Frequently asked questions

What does the Mud Shield 236072 protect on a Land Rover?
The mud shield (236072) is a pressed metal shield that fits over the differential drive flange, ahead of the pinion oil seal, on Series 2, 2A, 3, and Defender up to VIN KA930455. It deflects mud, grit, and water away from the pinion seal on both front and rear differentials to extend seal life.
Does the 236072 mud shield fit all Defender models?
No. Defender fitment has a ceiling at VIN KA930455. Later Defenders use a different pinion flange and seal arrangement that doesn't suit this shield. Check your VIN plate to confirm your Defender is within the supported range before ordering.
When does the mud shield typically need replacing?
The shield typically needs renewal when it's bent, cracked, or corroded enough to leave gaps that allow mud and water to reach the pinion seal directly. If the pinion seal is being replaced, it's good practice to inspect the mud shield at the same time and replace it if worn.
