Frequently asked questions

What is a split pin used for?
A split pin locks slotted nuts, clevis pins and linkage joints so they can't work loose. It passes through a drilled hole and you splay the two legs to retain the assembly. It's used at pinned joints throughout the vehicle, including door hinge and check-strap mechanisms.
Can a split pin be reused?
No, a split pin is single-use. Once the legs have been splayed and straightened they're fatigued and can fail, so fit a fresh pin every time you disturb the joint. They're cheap insurance on any safety-related pinned connection.
Where is this split pin used on a Defender?
On the Defender it's used at the front door hinges and check strap, and at the rear end door check mechanism. On 2007-2016 Defenders it secures the torsion-bar rear door check from VIN (V)7A000001. It also fits Series 2 and 3, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
