Pedal Shaft is the transverse shaft on which both the clutch pedal and brake pedal are mounted within the cab, on vehicles without a brake servo.

The shaft passes through the pedal box and is retained at each end, carrying the pedal arms on bushes or bearings. Wear on the shaft results in excessive pedal lateral play and can affect the feel and travel of both pedals. Supplied as a replacement shaft for use during pedal box rebuilds.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pedal Shaft (272712) used for on a Land Rover?
The Pedal Shaft is the transverse shaft that carries the clutch and brake pedals inside the cab on no-servo applications. It passes through the pedal box and mounts the pedal arms on bushes. Fitted to Land Rover Series 2 and 3 and the Defender up to 2016.
How do I know if the Pedal Shaft needs replacing?
A worn Pedal Shaft shows up as excessive sideways play in the clutch and brake pedals, which affects pedal feel and travel. The shaft wears where the pedal arms ride on it. It's typically renewed as part of a pedal box rebuild rather than on its own.
Does the Pedal Shaft fit all Defenders and Series models?
The Pedal Shaft fits Land Rover Series 2 and 3 (1958-1985) and the Defender up to 2016 on no-servo setups. On the Defender from 2007 (VIN 7A000001 on) it serves as the clutch pedal shaft. Confirm your pedal box layout before ordering, as servo-equipped vehicles differ.
Is fitting the Pedal Shaft a DIY job?
Fitting the Pedal Shaft typically means working in the pedal box footwell to release the pedal arms and retaining clips, then sliding the shaft out. It's usually a hand-tool job, but access is tight. Many fit it alongside a wider pedal box or clutch master cylinder overhaul.
