Brake Shoe Return Spring for the rear drum brake assembly, fitted at the upper end of the brake shoes adjacent to the wheel cylinder.

The spring holds the leading and trailing shoes against the wheel cylinder and retracts them clear of the drum when the brakes are released. This restores running clearance after each application and keeps the shoes correctly located against the cylinder pistons.

Frequently asked questions

What does the rear upper brake shoe spring 548169 do on a Series or Defender drum brake?
The upper brake shoe spring 548169 holds the leading and trailing shoes against the wheel cylinder and retracts them clear of the drum when the brakes are released. It's the spring at the top of the shoe assembly, positioned adjacent to the wheel cylinder, on 109-inch Series and Defender rear drum brakes.
How many upper brake shoe springs are needed for a full rear drum brake service?
Two upper springs are typically needed for a complete rear axle overhaul, one per wheel. There's also a lower spring per wheel, so a full rear drum service typically requires four springs in total across both rear corners.
What are the signs the brake shoe return spring has failed on a Defender or Series?
A failed or weak return spring typically causes brake drag, an uneven pedal feel, or the shoes staying in partial contact with the drum after releasing the pedal. Abnormal rear shoe wear and heat buildup at the drum are also typical symptoms on Defender and 109-inch Series models.
