What does the water seal do?

The water seal is the internal seal in the water pump that stops coolant leaking past the pump shaft. It fits the water pump on Land Rover Series II, IIA and III engines. It keeps the cooling system sealed and prevents coolant escaping into the pump body.

Where does the water seal fit?

The water seal fits inside the water pump, around the impeller shaft, on Series II, IIA and III engines. It sits between the shaft bearing and the impeller. It's replaced when overhauling the pump or tracing a coolant leak from the pump weep hole.

What are the signs of a failed water pump seal?

A failed water pump seal typically shows as coolant weeping from the pump body or weep hole, and loss of coolant over time. On Series engines you may see staining or drips below the pump. Replace the seal, or the whole pump, once it starts leaking to keep cooling reliable.

Can the water seal be fitted at home?

Fitting the water seal usually means removing and dismantling the water pump, a moderate job needing care to press the seal in square. Many owners fit a complete pump instead. If resealing, check the shaft and bearing for wear while the pump is apart.
