Frequently asked questions

What does the main bearing cap bolt do on the Rover V8?
The main bearing cap bolt is a 1/2in UNC bolt that fastens a main bearing cap to the cylinder block on the Rover V8. It clamps the cap and lower bearing shell around a crankshaft main journal, forming the housing that supports the crankshaft in the block. A genuine Land Rover bottom-end fastener.
How many main bearing cap bolts does a V8 engine use?
Ten main bearing cap bolts are used per Rover V8 engine. They clamp the main bearing caps to the cylinder block and are torqued to the workshop manual specification on assembly, as a critical bottom-end fastener. Fitted to Defender, Discovery 1 and 2, Range Rover Classic and P38 4.0L and 4.6L V8 petrol engines.
Where do the main bearing cap bolts sit in the engine?
The main bearing cap bolts sit in the bottom end of the Rover V8, inside the crankcase, threading down through each main bearing cap into the cylinder block.
