Flame Trap fits into the crankcase ventilation circuit of the V8 twin-carburettor petrol engine, between the crankcase breather and the carburettor intake.

Its internal gauze arrests any flame from a carburettor backfire, stopping it travelling back into the crankcase, while still allowing crankcase fumes to be drawn into the intake and burned. A clogged flame trap restricts engine breathing and can raise crankcase pressure, so it is renewed as part of routine servicing.

Frequently asked questions

What does the flame trap do on the twin-carb V8?
The flame trap sits in the crankcase ventilation circuit of the twin-carburettor V8, between the crankcase breather and the carburettor intake. Its internal gauze stops a carburettor backfire flame travelling back into the crankcase, while still letting crankcase fumes be drawn in and burned.
Does this flame trap fit EFI V8 engines too?
No, this flame trap is specific to the twin-carburettor V8 fitted to the Series 2 and 3, Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. EFI V8 engines use a different crankcase breather arrangement, so check your engine is the carburettor version before ordering.
What are the signs a flame trap needs replacing?
A clogged flame trap restricts engine breathing and raises crankcase pressure, which can show up as oil leaks from seals, fumes, or rough running. The gauze fills with oil mist over time, so it's renewed as part of routine servicing on the twin-carb V8.
