Why does this O-ring need renewing?
This O-ring typically hardens, shrinks and perishes with age and heat, which lets oil seep from the base of the dipstick tube on the V8. An oily film around the tube where it meets the block is the usual sign. It's cheap to renew whenever the dipstick tube is disturbed.
