Frequently asked questions

What is the Woodruff Key used for?
The Woodruff Key locates the timing gear and pulley on the crankshaft of the Rover V8 petrol engine. It sits in the crankshaft keyway and positively drives and aligns the timing components. It's used on the 3.5L V8 in the Defender, Series 2/3, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
Where does the Woodruff key sit?
This key sits at the front of the crankshaft, in a slot machined into the shaft, under the timing gear and crankshaft pulley. It stops those parts rotating on the shaft, keeping valve timing correct on the V8.
Should the key be replaced during a timing rebuild?
A Woodruff key is cheap and worth renewing when the crankshaft timing gear or pulley is off, since a worn or burred key can let the pulley move and upset timing. Check the keyway in the crankshaft for damage while it's apart.
