Core Plug - Cylinder Block Expansion Port is a pressed-steel sealing plug installed in the outer face of the cylinder block to close the casting apertures formed during engine manufacture.
These openings are produced as part of the sand-casting process and must be sealed to contain coolant within the block's internal water jacket. The plug seats in a machined bore in the cylinder block wall and is driven in to form a tight interference fit. Replacement is required when corrosion, freeze damage, or coolant weeping indicates that the plug has failed or is beginning to push out of its bore.
