Core Plug (Cup Type) for sealing the core holes left in the engine block casting after the sand cores are removed during manufacture.

The cup-shaped plug is pressed into the machined bore and seals against the coolant jacket, completing the cooling circuit. It also acts as a relief point if coolant freezes, helping protect the block from cracking.

Nominal 53mm diameter (measured 52.75mm).

Frequently asked questions

What is the ERC4996 core plug and what does it do?
The ERC4996 is a cup-type core plug that seals the core holes left in the engine block casting during manufacture. Pressed into the machined bore, it seals against the coolant jacket and completes the cooling circuit. This is the 53mm nominal size, measured at 52.75mm.
Which engines does this 53mm core plug fit?
This 53mm core plug fits the cylinder block on a wide range of Land Rover engines, including the Defender 2.25 and 2.5 petrol, 2.5 NA and turbo diesel, 200Tdi and 300Tdi, plus Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic Tdi. Several core plugs are fitted along each block.
What's needed to fit a core plug?
Fitting a core plug typically needs a drift or socket to press the new plug squarely into a cleaned bore, often with a smear of sealant around the rim. The bore must be clean and undamaged so the plug seals against coolant pressure in the block.
Why do core plugs need replacing?
Core plugs typically corrode and weep coolant from the outside in as they age, especially where coolant hasn't been changed regularly. A rusted or leaking plug is replaced to stop coolant loss. The plug also acts as a relief point if coolant freezes, helping protect the block from cracking.
