Frequently asked questions

What is the ETC4154 oil seal used for?
The ETC4154 oil seal is a front cover (crankshaft) oil seal for the Land Rover 2.5 litre four-cylinder and 200 Tdi diesel engines. It seals the front of the engine where the crankshaft passes through the timing cover, keeping oil in.
Which engines and models does it fit?
This front cover oil seal fits the 2.5 litre diesel and 200 Tdi engines in the Land Rover Defender (1987 to 2006), Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. It is an OEM Corteco seal, cross reference BR 1870.
When is this seal usually replaced?
This front cover seal is typically replaced during timing belt or front cover work, since access is already open then. Fitting a fresh ETC4154 seal while the front of the engine is apart avoids stripping it again for an oil leak later.
How do I know the front crankshaft seal is leaking?
A leaking front crankshaft seal usually shows as oil weeping from the timing cover area and oil thrown onto the belt or pulley. Replace the ETC4154 seal when you see this, as oil on a timing belt can shorten its life.
