Frequently asked questions

What is the rear crankshaft oil seal and what does it do?
The rear crankshaft oil seal fits at the back of the crankshaft where it exits the block towards the flywheel. It runs on the rear crank journal and closes the joint between the crankcase and the flywheel housing, stopping engine oil escaping along the crankshaft into the clutch bellhousing.
Which engines and models does this rear seal fit?
This rear crankshaft seal fits Land Rover Series 2 and 3, the Defender up to 2006, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic, across the 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines including the 200 TDi. It's the five-bearing crankshaft rear seal.
Should I replace this seal when the clutch or flywheel is off?
Yes, renew the rear crankshaft oil seal whenever the gearbox, clutch, or flywheel is removed and the seal is accessible. Access needs the flywheel off, so it's the natural time to fit a new one and avoid a repeat job for a small part.
What are the signs the rear crank seal is leaking?
A leaking rear crankshaft seal typically shows as engine oil at the bellhousing, oil at the gearbox joint, or oil on the clutch causing slip or judder. Because the seal sits behind the flywheel, renewing it means removing the gearbox and clutch.
