Water Pump Impeller in the engine cooling circuit.

Pressed onto the water pump spindle and driven by the fan belt, the impeller circulates coolant through the cylinder block, head and radiator to carry heat away from the engine. Fitted to the 2.0L and 2.25L 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. A corroded or eroded impeller reduces coolant flow and is renewed when the water pump is overhauled.

Frequently asked questions

What does the water pump impeller do?
The water pump impeller circulates coolant through the engine. Pressed onto the pump spindle and driven by the fan belt, it pushes coolant through the block, head and radiator to carry heat away. Fitted to the 2.0L and 2.25L 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines in Series 1, 2 and 3.
Why does a water pump impeller fail?
Water pump impellers fail through corrosion and erosion of the vanes, especially on older engines run without enough corrosion inhibitor in the coolant. As the vanes wear down, coolant flow drops and the engine starts to run hot. The impeller is renewed when the water pump is stripped and overhauled.
Is the impeller replaced on its own or with the pump?
The impeller is usually renewed as part of a water pump overhaul rather than on its own. It presses onto the pump spindle, so refitting needs the pump stripped and the impeller pressed back to the correct depth. Many people fit a complete pump instead unless they're rebuilding the original.
