Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC1956 detent spring do in the gearbox?
The RTC1956 is a detent spring in the LT77 gearbox and LT230 transfer box selector mechanism. It loads the detent ball against the selector shaft to hold the selected gear engaged and creates the positive resistance felt when moving through the gear lever gate.
Does this spring fit the LT95 gearbox?
No. RTC1956 does not fit the LT95 gearbox. It's specified for the LT77 5-speed gearbox and LT230 transfer box in the Defender and Series, Discovery 1 to VIN WA799999, and Range Rover Classic to VIN HA610293. The LT95 uses a different selector mechanism.
What are the symptoms of a worn or broken detent spring?
A failing detent spring typically causes gears to pop out of engagement under load, a loose and vague selector with no positive feel between ratios, or difficulty finding specific gears. On the LT77 it often affects 3rd and 4th gear selection first.
