The RTC5084 is a machine-sensed Lucas alternator for Series, early Defender, and Range Rover Classic V8 carburettor engines. 'No pulley, with fan' means the cooling fan is included but the drive pulley isn't: you must transfer the original drive pulley from the old alternator during fitting.

What does 'machine sensed' mean, and how do I know if my alternator is machine sensed?

Machine-sensed regulation means the alternator's voltage regulator monitors output voltage at the alternator terminal itself. Battery-sensed units have a separate sensing wire running to the battery. If your existing alternator has a sensing wire to the battery terminal, it's battery sensed and this unit won't match your setup.

Why do alternators fail on Series and early Defender engines, and what are the signs?

Lucas alternator failure on these engines is typically caused by a worn brush pack, faulty voltage regulator, or failing diode pack.
