Handbrake Cable - operating cable for the transmission parking brake.
The cable transmits movement from the handbrake lever in the cabin to the operating lever on the transmission brake drum mounted at the rear output of the transfer box, expanding the brake shoes against the drum to hold the vehicle stationary. The parking brake acts on the transmission output rather than on the road wheels, so it is entirely independent of the hydraulic service brake circuit.
The inner cable stretches and corrodes inside its outer sheath with age, giving excessive lever travel and a parking brake that no longer holds on a gradient. Renewing the cable restores correct lever travel and holding force.
