Castle Nut (castellated nut) used to retain halfshafts, output shafts and differential pinion shafts in Land Rover axle and drivetrain assemblies.

The castellated profile accepts a cotter pin (split pin) through a corresponding radial hole in the shaft, positively locking the nut against rotation and preventing it from backing off under vibration and load cycling in the axle and differential assemblies.

Frequently asked questions

What is the castle nut 3259 used for on a Land Rover?
The castle nut 3259 is a castellated nut that retains halfshafts, output shafts, and differential pinion shafts in Land Rover axle and drivetrain assemblies. The castellated profile accepts a cotter pin (split pin) through a radial hole in the shaft, positively locking the nut against rotation under vibration. Cross-references are AFU1242 and BR 0611.
Can the castle nut 3259 be reused after removal?
Castle nuts can typically be reused if in good condition and free of corrosion. However, always fit a new split pin each time; never reuse the old cotter pin. Inspect the nut threads carefully before refitting and replace if any damage or corrosion is found.
Does the 3259 castle nut fit all Defender and Series variants?
Not all. On the Series 2, it fits 88-inch models only. On the Series 3, it applies to 88-inch models to/from June 1980 with Rover-type axles only. On the Defender, it's used up to VIN KA930455. On the Discovery 1, only early vehicles with a castle nut rather than nyloc at the differential. On the Range Rover Classic, 4-bolt flange pinion only.
