Hub Bearing - the outer taper roller bearing that supports the wheel hub on the stub axle.

Each wheel hub runs on a pair of opposed taper roller bearings; this is the outer bearing of that pair, seating against the outer hub face and sharing the wheel load with the inner bearing. Fitted during hub overhaul, normally renewed together with the inner bearing, hub oil seal and lock tab washer to restore correct end-float.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC3426R hub bearing and what does it do?
The RTC3426R is the outer taper roller wheel hub bearing for Land Rover Series 2, 2A and 3. The hub runs on a pair of opposed taper roller bearings; this is the outer one, seating against the outer hub face and sharing the wheel load with the inner bearing on the stub axle.
How many outer bearings are needed and what should be renewed with them?
One outer bearing is fitted per hub, so you'll need one for each wheel being overhauled. On these Series hubs it's usually renewed as a set with the inner bearing and hub oil seal so end-float can be reset correctly. Fitting a new outer bearing against a worn inner one rarely lasts.
Which models and axles does this outer hub bearing fit?
This outer bearing fits the front and rear hubs of Land Rover Series 2 and 2A, and Series 3 up to September 1980. The same outer bearing is used at both axles. Check your build date against the fitment note, as later Series 3 models from late 1980 typically take a different bearing.
What are the signs a hub bearing needs replacing?
A worn hub bearing typically shows as wheel rumble or droning that changes with speed, play at the wheel when rocked, or roughness when spinning the hub by hand. On Series Land Rovers, ignoring a worn outer bearing can damage the stub axle and hub, so it's usually renewed in pairs during a hub overhaul.
