Frequently asked questions

What is the STC4286 12N 7-pin trailer socket used for?
The STC4286 is the 12N seven-pin trailer socket that carries the standard trailer road-lighting circuit. Wired to the ISO 1724 layout, it feeds side and marker lights, indicators, stop lights and the rear fog lamp from the vehicle's rear harness.
What does the 12N socket cover, and what doesn't it?
The 12N socket handles trailer road lighting only: indicators, side, stop and fog lamps plus earth. It doesn't supply the separate 12S auxiliary circuit used for caravan interior power, fridge or reversing feeds. Those need a dedicated 12S socket.
Which Land Rovers does the STC4286 fit?
It fits the Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994, from VIN JA610294). On the Range Rover Classic the JA610294 chassis break applies, so confirm your build using the VIN.
Can the STC4286 trailer socket be wired at home?
Wiring the 12N socket is typically a DIY job with basic tools, matching each connection to the ISO 1724 pin layout. Getting all seven pins right matters, so check the layout against your trailer plug before connecting.
