Handbrake Shoe Return Spring for the drum-in-hat parking brake assembly housed inside the rear brake disc bell.

The spring acts between the parking brake shoes, pulling them back off the drum friction face once the handbrake lever is released so that the shoes clear the drum and the brake does not drag. A stretched, fatigued or broken return spring leaves the shoes in contact with the drum, which causes binding, heat build-up and rapid lining wear, and can stop the handbrake releasing fully.

Replace the springs whenever the parking brake shoes or the shoe adjuster are renewed, and treat them as a set across the assembly rather than fitting one new spring against an aged one.
