Universal Joint for the propeller shaft assembly, transmitting rotational torque between adjoining shaft sections while permitting the angular movement that occurs as suspension travel changes the driveline angle.

The joint sits between the propshaft yokes, forming the cross-type pivot at the coupling between the gearbox or transfer case output and the axle input flange. It comprises a central cross (spider) carrying four needle-roller bearing caps retained in the yoke bores, maintaining rotational continuity through the joint as the connected shafts articulate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC3458 universal joint and what does it do?
The RTC3458 universal joint is the cross-and-bearing (spider) joint in the propshaft. It transmits drive torque between shaft sections while allowing the driveline angle to change as the suspension moves. It typically sits at the propshaft coupling between the transfer box output and an axle input flange.
Which Land Rovers does the RTC3458 propshaft UJ fit?
The RTC3458 fits the Land Rover Defender (up to 2016), Discovery 1 (1989-1998), Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38. The position, front or rear propshaft, varies by model and by chassis or VIN break, so check which propshaft your vehicle needs before ordering.
How many universal joints does a propshaft need?
Each propshaft typically carries two universal joints, one at each end, so a full propshaft overhaul usually needs two. Many owners renew both UJs on a shaft together, since they wear at a similar rate. Check your shaft to confirm how many this repair needs.
What are the signs a propshaft UJ needs replacing?
A worn propshaft universal joint typically shows as a clunk on take-up, vibration through the floor at speed, or a knock when moving between drive and overrun. Rust-coloured dust around the bearing caps or stiff, seized needle rollers are common signs. Left too long, a failing UJ can break up the propshaft.
