Differential Gear Kit for the Salisbury rear axle.

The differential is carried in the centre housing of the rear axle. It takes drive from the propeller shaft through the pinion and distributes it to the two halfshafts, while allowing them to rotate at different speeds as the vehicle turns.

This kit supplies the differential gear components for that assembly.

What is the RTC4488 Salisbury differential kit for?
The RTC4488 differential kit renews the differential in the Salisbury rear axle. The Salisbury differential takes drive from the propshaft through the pinion and splits it between the two halfshafts, letting them turn at different speeds through a corner. This is the 4 pinion crownwheel and pinion kit.
Does this fit any Defender, or only certain wheelbases?
This kit fits only vehicles with the Salisbury rear axle, which means the Land Rover Defender 110 and 130 from 1987 to 2006 and the Series 2 and 3 109 inch. Defender 90 and short wheelbase Series models typically use a different rear axle, so this kit doesn't suit them.
How do I identify a Salisbury axle on my Land Rover?
A Salisbury rear axle is identified by its one piece cast centre housing with a removable rear inspection cover, rather than the removable front differential carrier used on the Rover type axle. Look at the rear of the axle casing for a bolt on cover facing rearward.
What are the signs a Salisbury differential needs rebuilding?
A rising whine from the rear axle under drive, a clunk when taking up drive, and metal on the magnetic drain plug are the usual signs. On the Defender 110 and 130 the Salisbury differential typically suffers after towing or heavy load work with old or low oil.
