Oil Cooler Thermostat - the thermostatic control valve in the engine oil cooling circuit.

It regulates oil flow to the oil cooler in response to oil temperature, restricting flow through the cooler while the oil is still cold and opening progressively to route oil through the cooler once it reaches operating temperature. This keeps the lubricant within its target temperature band and prevents over-cooling during warm-up.

Fitted at the oil cooler take-off on both four-cylinder and V8 applications equipped with an engine oil cooler.

Frequently asked questions

What does the oil cooler thermostat do on a Land Rover?
The oil cooler thermostat regulates engine oil flow to the oil cooler based on oil temperature. It restricts flow through the cooler while the oil is cold and opens as it warms, holding the lubricant in its target temperature band. It's typically fitted at the oil cooler take-off.
Which Land Rovers use this oil cooler thermostat?
This oil cooler thermostat fits the Defender (1987-2006) 4-cylinder and V8 engines equipped with an oil cooler, Discovery 1 (1989-1998) 200TDi and 300TDi, and Range Rover Classic 200TDi and 300TDi. Only engines factory-fitted with an oil cooler use it.
What are the signs the oil cooler thermostat needs replacing?
A failed oil cooler thermostat typically sticks open or closed. Stuck open, the oil runs too cold and warms slowly; stuck closed, oil bypasses the cooler and can overheat. Erratic oil temperature on engines with an oil cooler is the usual sign.
Does this fit all Range Rover Classic models?
On Range Rover Classic, this thermostat applies to 200TDi and 300TDi engines from VIN JA610294 onward. Check your chassis number against this break, since earlier Classics and engines without an oil cooler don't use it.
