Aftermarket Part

Handbrake Cable for the parking brake system. It connects the handbrake lever to the parking brake mechanism, transmitting the lever movement that applies the brake.

On these vehicles the parking brake acts on a drum mounted at the rear of the transfer box (a transmission-mounted parking brake), and the cable runs from the lever to operate the brake actuating lever. Pulling the handbrake tensions the cable to apply the brake; releasing it allows the cable to slacken and the brake to release.

Frequently asked questions

What does the STC1528 handbrake cable do?
The STC1528 handbrake cable connects the handbrake lever to the transmission-mounted parking brake. Land Rover Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic use a drum brake on the rear of the transfer box, and this cable transmits lever movement to apply and release it.
Where does the handbrake cable run on the vehicle?
The handbrake cable runs from the lever in the cabin down to the parking brake drum on the rear of the transfer box. Unlike wheel-mounted parking brakes, this transmission brake acts on the propshaft output, so the cable operates a single actuating lever.
Why does the handbrake cable fail?
Handbrake cables typically fail when the inner cable frays or the outer sheath corrodes and seizes, giving a spongy or ineffective handbrake. Road salt and water at the transfer box speed this up. A cable that won't hold the vehicle on a slope usually needs replacing.
Which models does the STC1528 handbrake cable fit?
The STC1528 fits the Land Rover Discovery 1 (1989-1998) with EFI, TDi or twin-carb engines, from VIN FA393361 to WA799999, and the Range Rover Classic 1992-1994 from VIN JA610294. Check your VIN against these ranges to confirm the correct cable.
