Cylinder Head Bolt is the short-length head bolt that clamps the cylinder head to the block on the 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engines.

The head bolts secure the cylinder head and its gasket to the block, maintaining the clamping force that seals the combustion chambers, coolant passages and oil galleries. The head pattern uses bolts of more than one length; this is the short bolt, with an overall length of 2-5/16" (2.32"). Supplied individually.

Frequently asked questions

What does the short Cylinder Head Bolt (279648) do?
The Cylinder Head Bolt clamps the cylinder head and gasket to the block on the 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engines in the Land Rover Series 2, 3 and Defender up to 2016. It maintains the clamping force that seals the combustion chambers, coolant passages and oil galleries.
What's the difference between the short and long cylinder head bolts?
The head bolt pattern on these 4-cylinder petrol engines uses bolts of more than one length, and this is the short bolt. Fitting the wrong length in a given hole can bottom out or under-engage the thread, so match each bolt to its correct position. Supplied individually.
How many head bolts does the engine need?
A full cylinder head uses a complete set of bolts in a mix of lengths, and this short bolt is supplied individually. Count how many short-position bolts your head takes and order to suit, as the pattern combines short and longer bolts across the head.
Can cylinder head bolts be reused?
Inspect head bolts carefully before reusing them, checking for stretched threads, corrosion or damage. Because they hold the head gasket's clamping force, replace any bolt that looks stretched or worn, and re-torque all of them to the workshop manual sequence and figure when refitting the head.
