Cylinder Head to Block Stud for the four-cylinder diesel engines - 2.25L and 2.5L naturally-aspirated. The stud threads into the cylinder block deck and, with its nut and washer, clamps the cylinder head and head gasket down onto the block.

Head studs carry the clamping load that seals combustion pressure, coolant and oil at the head-to-block joint. They are tightened to the specified torque in sequence so clamping force is spread evenly across the gasket. A stretched, seized or corroded stud can allow gasket failure, coolant loss into the bores and loss of compression, so studs are inspected whenever the head is removed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the cylinder head to block stud do?
The cylinder head to block stud threads into the cylinder block deck and, with its nut and washer, clamps the head and head gasket onto the block. It carries the clamping load that seals combustion pressure, coolant and oil at the head-to-block joint on the four-cylinder diesel engines.
Which engines use this head stud?
This head stud fits the 2.25-litre and 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engines used in Land Rover Series 2 and 3 and the Defender from 1987 to 2006. A full head uses several studs, so check how many your engine needs before ordering.
What length is the cylinder head stud?
This cylinder head to block stud measures 81mm. Land Rover four-cylinder engines typically use studs of differing lengths in different positions, so match the 81mm length to the position you're replacing to be sure of the correct stud.
Should head studs be replaced when the head comes off?
Head studs should be checked whenever the cylinder head is removed. A stretched, seized or corroded stud can't hold correct clamping force and may let the head gasket fail, so studs showing damage or corrosion are typically renewed during a head gasket job.
