The steering system carries the driver's input from the wheel to the front tyres, and feeds every bump and road camber back through the same path. On beam-axle Land Rover models that means a steering box, drop arm, drag link and track rod; on rack-and-pinion models it is a steering rack, track rod ends and, where power-assisted, a pump, hose and reservoir. Worn components show up as play or vagueness at the wheel, wander or pulling under braking, a clonk over bumps, or fluid leaks from a pump or hose. Because steering works within the wider Land Rover axle, suspension and steering system, it is worth checking the ball joints and bushes at the same time.
This page brings together the steering range for Series, Defender, Discovery, Freelander and Range Rover models. Left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive variants use different steering boxes, racks, columns and drop arms across most of this range, so confirm your build before ordering. Buying GuideBefore anything else, confirm left-hand-drive or right-hand-drive. Steering boxes, racks, columns, drop arms and some pipework are handed, so the same model and engine can need two different part numbers depending on drive side. Check this alongside the model and build date rather than assuming it from the vehicle's market.
A worn steering box or rack does not always need full replacement. Seal and repair kits can renew leaking seals, boots and gaiters and other small serviceable components, but they will not correct worn gears, bearings, a pitted shaft or a damaged housing, so they suit a unit that is otherwise sound. Where the housing is worn, pitted or the fluid shows metal contamination, fit a complete steering box, steering gear or steering rack instead. The same logic applies to steering dampers: some are supplied with their bush included, others need the bush ordered separately, so check the listing before you buy.
Genuine, OEM and aftermarket. Genuine steering boxes, racks and columns carry the Land Rover part number and sit at the top of the price range, particularly on later electric power-assisted racks. OEM or OES parts come from original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers, and brands such as Lemforder, Delphi, Bosch and Meyle may appear as OE, OES or aftermarket depending on the specific item. Aftermarket also covers reconditioned exchange units and value brands for wear items such as track rod ends, drag links and steering linkage hardware. For a standard repair, an OEM or OES part is usually the sensible balance of cost and quality; save genuine for warranty-sensitive or late-model vehicles where an exact match matters.

Match the part to your specific vehicle before ordering, starting with drive side. Left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive Land Rovers may use different steering boxes, racks, columns, drop arms, pipework and mounting hardware, so confirm this before the model or engine. Work from the build date and VIN rather than the model year alone, because steering specification can change mid-production and between markets. The VIN plate is on the chassis or under the bonnet depending on model; a VIN or chassis-number search returns the exact steering build. On power-assisted systems, also confirm whether your vehicle uses hydraulic or electric assistance, since the pump, hose and reservoir parts differ between the two.
FittingSteering components are safety-critical parts that directly control the vehicle. Fit new locking nuts and split pins where specified, torque all fixings to the correct figure, and confirm left-hand-drive or right-hand-drive before ordering. Book a wheel alignment after replacing any part that sets toe.

It depends on condition, not just age. A repair or seal kit can renew leaking seals, boots and gaiters and other small serviceable components, but it will not correct worn gears, bearings, a pitted shaft or a damaged housing, so it suits a unit that is otherwise sound. Where the housing is worn, pitted, or the fluid shows metal contamination, fit a complete steering box, steering gear or steering rack instead.
A steering damper controls kickback and oscillation at the front wheels, smoothing out the shock from ruts, potholes and rough tracks before it reaches the steering wheel. Some listings include the mounting bush, others supply the damper alone, so check the listing before ordering, especially if the existing bush is perished or cracked.
The track rod connects the two front wheels together and sets the toe angle, with a track rod end (a ball joint) at each side. The drag link, found on beam-axle steering-box vehicles, connects the steering box drop arm to the steering arm on the axle and transmits the driver's steering input. Both wear at their ball joints and both are checked for play in the same way.
Yes, for any part that sets or affects toe, including track rod ends, drag links, steering racks and steering arms. Book a four-wheel alignment after fitting to protect tyre life and keep the steering true. Parts that do not set toe, such as a power steering pump or hose, do not need a follow-up alignment.
