What is the RTC3471 ignition condenser?

The RTC3471 is an ignition condenser (capacitor) for the distributor in the ignition primary circuit of Series 2 and 3 petrol engines. Connected across the contact breaker points, it absorbs the inductive surge as the points open, suppressing the arc that would otherwise burn the contact faces.

What happens when an ignition condenser fails?

When the ignition condenser fails, the points arc and burn quickly, causing weak spark, misfiring, hard starting or a stall on a Series Land Rover. Because it protects the points and sharpens the spark, a failed condenser is a common cause of ignition trouble on points systems.

Where does the condenser fit in the ignition system?

The condenser fits inside or on the Lucas distributor, wired across the contact breaker points in the ignition primary circuit. On the Series 2/3 it works with the coil and points to produce a clean spark, and this short-lead version suits its mounting position.
