Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC3288 Contact Set used for?
The RTC3288 contact set is the breaker-point set for the Lucas ignition distributor on petrol Land Rover Series 2 and 3 engines. Mounted on the distributor baseplate, the points open and close as the shaft turns, interrupting the coil's primary current to fire the spark. It's a fixed and a moving contact supplied as a matched set.
When do the distributor contact points need replacing?
Distributor contact points wear as a service item, since the rubbing block and contact faces erode over time and close up the gap. Common signs are misfiring, hard starting, and uneven running. The points typically need cleaning or renewing, with the contact gap reset. Always set the gap correctly on installation.
What tools are needed to fit and set the RTC3288?
Fitting the RTC3288 typically needs a screwdriver to release the points and a feeler gauge to set the contact gap. It's a common DIY job on these Lucas distributors, though the gap must be set accurately and ignition timing usually needs checking afterwards. An incorrect gap affects starting and running.
