Ontstekingscondensator voor het contactpunt (onderbreker) ontstekingssysteem, gemonteerd in de verdeler.

De condensator is een condensator die over de contactpunten is aangesloten. Wanneer de contactpunten openen, absorbeert deze de stroomstoot die anders over de opening zou doorslaan, waardoor het inbranden en putjes ontstaan van de contacten wordt onderdrukt en de ineenstorting van het primaire veld van de spoel wordt verscherpt om een sterkere vonk te geven. Gemonteerd op benzinemotoren met contactpunt-verdelers.

Wordt normaal gesproken samen met de contactpunten vervangen als onderdeel van een routine-ontstekingsonderhoudsbeurt.

What is the RTC3472 ignition condenser and what does it do?

The RTC3472 ignition condenser is a capacitor wired across the contact-breaker points in a points-type distributor. As the points open it absorbs the current surge that would otherwise arc across the gap, preventing burning and pitting of the contacts and sharpening the coil's spark. It's fitted to petrol engines running points ignition.

Which models and engines does this condenser fit?

This condenser fits points-ignition petrol engines across Land Rover Series 1, 2, 2A and 3, the Defender V8 3.5 with Stromberg or Lucas carburettor, and the Range Rover Classic V8 3.5 to 1985. Some Series 3 applications have exceptions, including the 2.6 with Lucas distributor 41631, so check your distributor against the fitment note.

When should the ignition condenser be replaced?

The condenser is normally renewed together with the contact points during an ignition service. A failed condenser typically causes weak or erratic spark, hard starting, or rapid burning of the points. Because it's inexpensive and the points are already disturbed during a tune-up, it's common to replace both at the same time.
