Frequently asked questions

What does the Lower Engine & Gearbox Mount (4788) do?
The Lower Engine & Gearbox Mount (4788) is the bottom rubber mounting that isolates the engine and gearbox from the chassis. It absorbs running vibration and locates the drivetrain on its supporting crossmember. It's a bonded rubber-and-steel mount fitted to Land Rover Series 1 and Series 2 and 3 models.
Why does the lower engine and gearbox mount fail?
The lower engine and gearbox mount fails when its bonded rubber perishes, cracks or softens with age and oil contamination. A worn mount typically allows excess drivetrain movement, causing extra vibration and clunks through the chassis. Replacing a collapsed mount restores correct engine and gearbox alignment on these Series models.
Is this a single mount for both the engine and gearbox?
Yes, the 4788 is a combined lower mounting used in the engine and gearbox support on Land Rover Series models. It sits at the bottom of the drivetrain on the supporting crossmember. The exact application differs between early and later Series cars, so confirm which position you're replacing.
How do I confirm this mount fits my Series Land Rover?
This lower mount (4788) fits Land Rover Series 1 and Series 2 and 3. The engine and gearbox applications vary across the Series production run, so check your engine size and mounting position against the old part. Comparing the diameter and central bore of your existing mount is the surest check.
