Frequently asked questions

What does the 523240 crankshaft oil seal do?
The 523240 crankshaft oil seal is the outer (rear) main seal, fitted where the crankshaft exits the cylinder block. It seals around the rotating crankshaft to stop engine oil escaping past the shaft. It suits the 2.25L petrol and diesel engine used in the Series 2 and 3 and early Defenders.
Why is this crankshaft seal supplied in two halves?
This crankshaft oil seal is a two-piece design because it fits around the crankshaft between the block and the rear main bearing cap, where a one-piece ring can't be slipped over the shaft. The two halves locate together around the journal to form the seal.
Which vehicles and engines does this seal fit?
This seal fits the 2.25L petrol and diesel engine in the Land Rover Series 2 and 3, and the Defender with the 2.25L engine from 1983 to 1986. The earlier Series 2 from 1958 to 1961 with the 2.0 diesel engine also uses it. Confirm your engine before ordering.
When should the rear crankshaft seal be replaced?
The rear crankshaft seal typically needs replacing when oil appears at the back of the engine, around the bellhousing joint, since a worn seal lets oil weep past the crankshaft. It's usually renewed while the gearbox or engine is out, as access is limited once everything's assembled.
