It sits between the camshaft-driven tappet and the rocker arm, transmitting the lifting motion from the cam up to the rocker so each valve opens in time with the camshaft. It runs against the valve spring, which returns the valve to its seat and keeps the push rod loaded against its followers throughout the cycle.
