PDWA Switch (Pressure Differential Warning Actuator) is part of the brake hydraulic circuit, bridging the two independent front and rear pressure lines.

It monitors the pressure balance between the two circuits. If either circuit loses pressure, the resulting differential trips the switch and illuminates the brake warning lamp on the instrument panel, alerting the driver to a hydraulic fault. Fitted to non-ABS (less Anti-Lock Braking System) applications.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Defender up to 2016
Fitment Notes DEFENDER 1987-2006 — Pressure differential warning (PDWA) switch, non-ABS (Less Anti-Lock Braking System) models, up to VIN HA901219

Frequently asked questions

What does the PDWA switch do on a Land Rover Defender?
The PDWA (Pressure Differential Warning Actuator) switch monitors the balance between the front and rear brake hydraulic circuits. If either circuit loses pressure, the resulting imbalance trips the switch and lights the brake warning lamp. It's fitted to non-ABS Defenders.
Does this switch suit ABS or non-ABS brakes?
This PDWA switch suits non-ABS (less Anti-Lock Braking System) Defenders only. On ABS cars the wheel-speed sensors and modulator handle circuit monitoring, so the PDWA switch isn't used. Check your car's brake setup before ordering.
How do I confirm this PDWA switch fits my Defender?
This PDWA switch fits the Land Rover Defender from 1987 up to VIN HA901219, on non-ABS models. Later cars with ABS use a different arrangement, so use your VIN to confirm your Defender falls within that build range.
What are the signs a PDWA switch needs replacing?
A brake warning lamp that stays on with no pressure fault, or one that won't reset after bleeding, typically points to a faulty PDWA switch. The internal seals and contacts can corrode or stick over time. Confirm the hydraulic pressure is actually balanced before replacing it.
