Crankshaft Damper for the 300TDi 2.5L turbo diesel engine, mounted on the front nose of the crankshaft.

This torsional vibration damper absorbs the rotational oscillations produced by the diesel combustion pulses, protecting the crankshaft from fatigue and smoothing drive to the auxiliary belt. The outer pulley ring is bonded to the hub through an elastomer element; perishing or separation of this element is a common failure that leads to belt misalignment and vibration.

What does the crankshaft damper do on a 300TDi?

Why do 300TDi crankshaft dampers fail?
The crankshaft damper fails when the elastomer element bonded between the outer pulley ring and the hub perishes or separates. On the 300TDi this typically leads to belt misalignment and vibration. A damper with a visibly shifted, cracked or separated outer ring should be replaced.
