Timing Belt Tensioner for the 200TDi 2.5L turbo diesel engine, part of the camshaft timing belt drive.

The tensioner maintains correct tension on the toothed timing belt, keeping it in accurate mesh with the crankshaft, camshaft and injection pump sprockets and preventing tooth jump. A worn bearing or weakened tensioner lets the belt slacken, risking mistiming; on this interference engine a failed belt allows valve-to-piston contact. Replacement is recommended whenever the timing belt is renewed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR2530 timing belt tensioner used for?
The ERR2530 timing belt tensioner keeps the toothed timing belt correctly tensioned on the 2.5L 200TDi diesel engine, holding it in accurate mesh with the crankshaft, camshaft and injection pump sprockets. It fits the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic running the 200TDi engine.
Why does the timing belt tensioner fail on a 200TDi engine?
The timing belt tensioner typically fails when its bearing wears or the spring weakens, letting the belt slacken. On the 200TDi interference engine a slack or jumped belt can cause mistiming and valve-to-piston contact. A worn tensioner is a common reason the belt lets go.
Should the tensioner be replaced with the 200TDi timing belt?
Yes, replace the ERR2530 tensioner whenever the 200TDi timing belt is renewed. Fitting a fresh belt over a worn tensioner risks early belt failure on this interference engine, so it's standard practice to change both together.
How do I confirm the ERR2530 fits my vehicle?
The ERR2530 fits the Land Rover Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1 (from VIN LA081991, 1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994, from VIN JA610294), all with the 2.5L 200TDi engine. Check your engine is the 200TDi and not the later 300TDi before ordering.
